Giant Sinkhole In Guatemala 2010 Updates

sinkhole guatemala

You’ll think the photo above is fake or photoshop at first glance. But this is real! The photo above is a giant sinkhole “hundimiento” posted at the Guatemalan Government’s Flickr feed. It is 20 meters deep and 15 meters wide, it swallowed an entire 3-story building. It was reported that the tropical storm Agatha made a break in the over-stressed sewage pipes causing it to a sink hole. The same incident occured last 2007.

The phenomenon of “hundimientos,” or rain-flooded earth during disaster-level storms just opening up and swallowing roads and buildings, is something endemic to Guatemala because of the local geology. It is also known as Karst Topography. It happens anywhere there is limestone rich soils.

Our planet is moaning and groaning excessively these days. I wonder what is in store for us in the near future? It is very frightening and sobering with all these increase in natural and man-made disasters that are occurring. I have never seen so much devastation taking place these days. Our world is changing right before our eyes.
