You’ll think the photo above is fake or photoshop at first glance. But this is real! The photo above is a giant sinkhole “hundimiento” posted at the Guatemalan Government’s Flickr feed. It is 20 meters deep and 15 meters wide, it swallowed an entire 3-story building. It was reported that the tropical storm Agatha made a break in the over-stressed sewage pipes causing it to a sink hole. The same incident occured last 2007.
The phenomenon of “hundimientos,” or rain-flooded earth during disaster-level storms just opening up and swallowing roads and buildings, is something endemic to Guatemala because of the local geology.
